Ductless mini-split air conditioners are easy to install because they don't need ductwork to provide cooling. However, this doesn't mean that you can place the appliance anywhere in your home. Proper placement of the components can boost performance, simplify maintenance, and prolong the appliance's lifespan. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect location for your unit.

Consider the Equipment's Weight

A mini-split has two key components: the outdoor unit and the indoor air handler. Indoor units are usually lightweight and easy to install. However, if you intend to mount the unit on a wall or ceiling, ensure that the surface is sturdy enough to handle the weight of the components. Note that indoor units vibrate when in operation, which can weaken the wall or ceiling.

Outdoor units are heavier than indoor units. Therefore, they require a spot with even and sturdy ground. Don't install the outdoor unit on soft ground, as the soil can shift and affect the unit's performance. If you plan to mount the outdoor unit on the exterior wall or the roof, ensure that the surface can handle the component's weight. 

Choose a Location With No Obstructions

Airflow can impact indoor comfort and AC performance. The outdoor unit requires adequate air around it to dissipate heat from the house and cool the mechanical components. Inadequate airflow causes overheating, short cycling, and shortens the lifespan of the compressor and motor.  Optimize airflow to the unit by installing it away from obstructions such as debris and vegetation. 

Indoor units require adequate operating space to push air into the indoor spaces. Obstructions can hinder airflow and prevent sufficient cooling. Before mounting your indoor air handler near the floor, check for obstructions, such as furniture, rugs, plants, and window furnishings. If you want the unit to be less conspicuous, place it a few feet away from the nearest obstruction to allow proper airflow.

Find a Spot With No Temperature Variations

Modern air conditioners can fail to work correctly due to temperature fluctuations. They use inverter technology to match the compressor speed to the cooling demand. Thus, when the temperatures are high, the mini-split operates at maximum speed to provide sufficient cooling. Conversely, when the cooling demand is low, the compressor runs at a low speed to deliver cool air without consuming too much energy.

If you place the indoor unit in a location with fluctuating temperatures, it won't work efficiently. For example, if the sensors are in the path of direct sunlight, they will record a higher temperature than the ambient air, prompting the compressor to run at maximum speed to cool the home. To optimize performance, place the indoor unit in a location with stable temperatures.
